An excerpt from the genealogy of the Prince family from page 792 of Volume 6, Number 1 of "Old Times of North Yarmouth, Maine," the town where she was born, includes the following members of the family: "....228 Elizabeth Oakes [Prince]; b. Aug. 12, 1806 ; m. Mar. 6, 1823, Seba Smith, ('Major Jack Downing,') who was b. at Turner, Me., ______ __. 1792, grad. at Bowdoin College, 1818, and d. at Patchogue, Long Island, New York, 1868. Mrs. Elizabeth Oakes Smith entered, early in life, upon a literary career, and has taken a foremost rank among American women of genius, not only as a writer of prose, but as a poetess. Bertha and Lily ; The Lost Angel ; Western Captive ; The Newsboy ; Sagamore of Saco ; Woman and her Needs ; Beauty and Dress , are among her numerous prose works. The following are well-known poems : The Acorn ; Destiny ; Roman Tribute ; Jacob Leisler ; The Sinless Child...." Mrs. Smith contributed several articles to various issues of "Old Times." Old Times of North Yarmouth, Maine offered for sale. |
