"A Record of this family was begun in April, 1821, by Ephrain Corliss (482), of Haverhill, Mass., who possessed many of the old papers of George Corliss (1) and his son John (4), and grandson (12) of the same name. With these facilities, and having access to the town records, he carried on the history with good success. At his death, the work was continued by Mrs. Betsy (Corliss) Ayer (510), of the same place. "In 1868, the publisher of this volume, knowing nothing of the previous efforts in the same direction, began the work of collecting material for a full history of the family; and the result is the present imperfect volume. The author is aware that there are errors and imperfections in this book; but many of them are unavoidable, and can only be understood by those who have made an attempt to collect data under the same difficulties and obstructions that surround him in his labors. To the difficulties attending genealogical researchers, even under the most favorable circumstances, the author of this work has had, in addition, the inconveniences resulting from several changes of station by the regiment to which he belongs. Begun in Georgia, the work has been carried on in North and South Carolina, Dakota, Montana, and Nebraska, and was completed in far-off Arizona. Many of the pages were prepared after long marches in the wonderful Yellowstone country, during the Yellowstone Expeditions of 1872-3, or at the Spotted Tail Indian Agency, on White Earth River, Dakota, in 1874. "The press-work was performed upon a small hand-press in Arizona; and, to those who are conversant with the difficulties inseparable from printing in a climate where the mercury stands, at times, 118° in the shade, it is thought that no apology is needed for the faulty appearance of some parts of the work." |
